Bulgaria faces financial sanctions on non-compliance with EU legislation

The EC has brought Bulgaria to the EU Court of Justice for non-adoption of the EU legislation for naval policy and incomplete transposition of the author rights directive in the local legislation, the EC announced. The EC has demanded Bulgaria to pay over EUR 33,000 per day on both charges. If the Court of Justice imposes Bulgaria the demanded sanctions, the country will have to pay them until the day it adopts the required EU rules. The sanction payment takes place either by withholding EU funds or by direct payments from the budget. The naval policy rules had to be adopted by Sep 2016 at the latest and the transposition of the author rights was supposed to take place by Apr 2016.

The EC also called on Bulgaria to adopt the EU directive on money laundering within two months or it will refer the case to the Court of Justice as well.
