The National Election Commission rejected to register the referendum questions initiated by liberal LMP against the Paks nuclear power plant expansion, local media reported. LMP spokesman Jozsef Gal had submitted five questions for a referendum against the Paks project as a private individual. The commission concluded that most of the questions could not be registered since they represented interference with obligations arising from an international agreement, which cannot be subject to a referendum. Some of the questions did not meet the conditions of clarity, according to the commission.
The commission’s refusal to register the questions will likely not stop the LMP from challenging the project again. The party has said that it will submit referendum questions incessantly till it receives an approval. It has also said that it might initiate a regional referendum against the project as well.
