Ford Romania produced over 36,300 SUVs in Q1, which would push up its annual production value to nearly EUR1bn, according to calculations of the business daily Ziarul Financiar. Ford produced 38,900 vehicles last year, with a total value of the production of EUR825m. Thus, the average monthly production of the Ford domestic factory exceeded 12,000 units, above the 10,000 units threshold recorded since the US-based car manufacturer entered the local market. Ford also produces Ecoboost engines in the Romanian factory. The production of engines also exceeded the maximum threshold of 800,000 units in Q1 this year.
Ford entered Romania in 2007 by taking over the state-controlled vehicles factory in Craiova. Yet, the series production started with delay, in 2011. Ford obtained state aid in 2008 in exchange of meeting some investment and production targets. However, the targets were missed so the company asked the government for an extension and reiterated investment pledges. The company produced in Romania B-Max cars and EcoBoost engines until the end of last year, when its switched to SUVs production, giving up the Ecosport cars for addressing demand changes in Europe. Ford exports more than 90% of its production, mostly in the EU. The company ranked among Romania’s top three exporters in 2013.
