PSD leader Liviu Dragnea to announce Romanian PM nomination on Dec 21

Liviu Dragnea, leader of the Social Democratic Party will announce the party’s proposal for the new prime minister position on Wednesday, Dec 21, Dragnea said in a tv interview yesterday. The winner of the general elections will agree on the new PM with its partner ALDE (Alliance for Democrats and Liberals), the PSD leader emphasised. The PSD won the Dec 11 general elections, but not with absolute majority, so it has to set up an alliance for being able to majority support the next cabinet. A PSD-ALDE coalition could control 51% of the newly elected parliament, according to the final results of the elections. The president has called all political parties that entered in the parliament for consultations on the next ruling on Dec 21 and 22.

Liviu Dragnea cannot be prime minister, because he has a criminal conviction for fraud and the domestic regulations do not allow convicts to be part of the government. Dragnea underlined that the PSD proposal for next PM is neither him nor any other names that the local media has speculated so far. Yet, he assured that the next cabinet will be carefully monitored for exactly implementing the Socialists’ ruling programme.
