Rampini – one of the largest bus producing factories in Italy – is in talks regarding setting up a manufacturing base in Hungary. CEO Stefano Rampini said the plan is to use Hungarian suppliers, while the exact location of the manufacturing base remains undisclosed. The electric buses will be produced for the Hungarian market at first, later being expanded to Western Europe.
The Rampini brand name surfaced earlier in Hungary, when in 2014 Siemens-Rampini won the tender for 21 electric buses by Budapest Transport Center BKV. However, without government support and approval, BKV was not able to purchase the vehicles.
Rampini’s plant is not the first such planned for Hungary. BYD, a Chinese electric bus company, has also shown interest in building a manufacturing base in Komárom. The factory would produce electric buses, cars and trucks and employ 300 workers. Similarly to Rampini, BYD also won a tender earlier, but in the end BKV did not purchase the buses, index.hu said. BYD is allegedly also looking into setting up a e-bus production plant in the country.
