Six mines to be opened in Serbia in next few years

Six mines will be opened in Serbia in the next few years, assistant energy minister Sinisa Tanackovic said as cited by the daily Vecernje Novosti. He noted that a copper mine will be opened near Bor, a lithium mine – near Loznica, a coal mine – near Zvonacka Banja, an iron mine – in western Serbia, a lead and zinc mine – near Bosilegrad and a coal mine – in Radjev. Tanackovic said that the opening of the six mines will help increase the share of the mining sector to 3.5% of GDP from the current 1.5%. The mining and geological sector employs about 22,000 people and there are 160 companies that exploit mineral resources in 250 locations.
