President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed energy and economic cooperation with the US President Donald Trump by phone. Trump congratulated Zelensky on his party’s victory in the snap election on July 21. Zelensky’s office said Trump urged Ukraine to complete the investigation of corruption cases that held back cooperation between the two countries. Zelensky thanked Trump for strengthening sanctions against Russia. It is not clear whether the two discussed plans for Zelensky’s forthcoming visit to the US to meet Trump, which is expected in the autumn. This was the second phone conversation between the two. Trump phoned Zelensky to congratulate him on his presidential election victory last April.
Zelensky recently suggested that the US and the UK should join the Normandy-format talks on Donbass settlement, which are supposed to involve the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany. The talks have been stalled since 2016. Ukraine also sees the US as a strong ally in energy matters. Both have been opposing the Russo-German Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
